Moreover, applying a topical anesthetic may also require the use of a sharp implement to apply the anesthetic to the gums, which is unpleasant for the patient and may be a risk of pain. Other methods of providing anesthetic may also be undesirable. For example, nitrous oxide has been used for some time to provide anesthetic to a patient's mouth. However, nitrous oxide is very flammable and is not available in some locations. Other methods of providing anesthetic may include injecting an anesthetic directly into the patient's mouth, injecting an anesthetic into a patient's jaw or into an intermediate region of the patient's mouth (e.g., a cheek area).
